Speed sensors location on the 45RFE / 545RFE transmission.

The Input and Output Speed Sensors are two-wire magnetic pickup units that generate AC indicators as rotation happens. They are mounted within the left facet of the transmission case and are thought of major inputs to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Note:
The 42RE transmissions use a single sensor (positioned on the overdrive gear case, over the park gear). The 45RFE / 545RFE transmissions use two sensors, an enter velocity sensor and an output velocity sensor. Both are the identical half quantity.

Operation:

The Input Speed Sensor offers info on how briskly the enter shaft is rotating. As the tooth of the enter clutch hub move by the sensor coil, an AC voltage is generated and despatched to the TCM. The TCM interprets this info as enter shaft rpm.

The Output Speed Sensor generates an AC sign similarly, although its coil is worked up by rotation of the rear planetary service lugs. The TCM interprets this info as output shaft rpm.

The TCM compares the enter and output velocity indicators to find out the next:

  • Transmission gear ratio
  • Speed ratio error detection
  • CVI calculation

The TCM additionally compares the enter velocity sign and the engine velocity sign to find out the next:

  • Torque converter clutch slippage
  • Torque converter ingredient velocity ratio

Sensor failure:

Failure of the Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor and/or the Output Shaft Speed Sensors are considerably frequent on early mannequin WJ Grand Cherokees. Diagnostic Trouble codes which may be tripped are:

P0500 – No automobile velocity sensor sign

P0720 – Low Output SPD Sensor RPM Above 15 MPH
The relationship between the Output Shaft Speed Sensor and automobile velocity isn’t inside acceptable limits.

P0720 – Low Output SPD Sensor RPM Above 15 MPH
Output shaft velocity is lower than 60 rpm with automobile velocity above 15 mph (4-speed auto. trans. solely).

P0721-P0723 – Sensor circuit vary, efficiency, no sign

Speed sensor elimination

1. Raise automobile.
2. Place an appropriate fluid catch pan beneath the transmission.
3. Remove the wiring connector from the enter velocity sensor.
4. Remove the bolt holding the enter velocity sensor to the transmission case.
5. Remove the enter velocity sensor from the transmission case.

Speed sensor set up

1. Install the enter velocity sensor into the transmission case.
2. Install the bolt to carry the enter velocity sensor into the transmission case. Tighten the bolt to 105 in.lbs. (11.9 N·m).
3. Install the wiring connector onto the enter velocity sensor
4. Verify the transmission fluid stage. Add fluid as crucial.
5. Lower automobile.
